Festive Eating with Braces: Foods to Enjoy and What to Avoid This Holiday Season

Festive Eating with Braces: Foods to Enjoy and What to Avoid This Holiday Season

The holidays are filled with favourite dishes, tempting treats and time with people you love. If you are wearing braces, you can still enjoy it all with a little planning. In this guide, our orthodontic team shares which festive foods are safe, which ones to skip, and simple tips to help you eat comfortably without risking a breakage.

Festive foods you can enjoy with braces

Good news - plenty of seasonal classics are soft, braces friendly and delicious. Aim for dishes that are tender, moist and easy to chew.

Roasts and mains:

Turkey, chicken or nut roast with gravy, soft salmon, slow cooked beef or lamb. Slice meat into small, fork sized pieces before eating.

Sides that smile:

Mashed or roasted potatoes, cauliflower cheese, soft stuffing made with stock, steamed greens cooked until tender, roasted parsnips and carrots cut into small pieces.

Pastry and bakes:

Soft Yorkshire puddings, flaky puff pastry pies with tender fillings, quiche. Avoid very hard crusts.

Sauces and extras:

Gravy, cranberry sauce, bread sauce and apple sauce are all gentle on braces.

Cheese board ideas:

Soft cheeses such as brie, camembert and cream cheese spreads. Pair with thinly sliced soft bread rather than hard crackers.

Puddings:

Custard, mousse, sponge puddings with cream, pavlova with soft meringue, trifle without hard nuts or chewy toffee, mince pie filling - enjoy the inside with a spoon if the pastry is very hard.

Breakfast and snacks:

Scrambled eggs, pancakes, porridge with cinnamon, yoghurt, ripe bananas and sliced pears.

Tip: Keep textures soft and cut food small. Taking your time with each bite protects brackets and wires.

Festive treats to avoid with braces

Some holiday favourites can bend wires, loosen brackets or trap sugar around your teeth. Avoid these until treatment is finished.

Hard or sticky sweets:

Toffees, caramels, chocolate covered caramels, nougat, boiled sweets and candy canes.

Nuts and kernels:

Whole almonds, hazelnuts, peanut brittle, popcorn and unpopped kernels. Smooth nut butters are fine.

Crunchy biscuits and crusts:

Biscotti, very hard shortbread, crisp gingerbread, thick pizza crusts and tough baguette ends.

Chewy or crunchy chocolate:

Chocolate with hard nuts or honeycomb pieces. Choose plain chocolate that melts easily.

Raw hard veg and fruit:

Whole apples, raw carrots and parsnips. Cook until soft or cut into small, bite sized pieces.

Sticky dried fruit:

Very chewy dried figs or dates can cling to brackets. If you choose dried fruit, rinse after and brush as soon as you can.

A simple rule - if it is hard, sticky or very chewy, save it for after your braces come off.

How to enjoy holiday meals comfortably with braces

A few smart habits let you relax and enjoy every course.

  • Cut, do not tear: Use a knife and fork to cut meat, pastry and crusts into small bites.
  • Balance textures: Pair anything slightly chewy with a soft side like gravy, mash or sauce.
  • Take your time: Slow chewing reduces the risk of biting down on something too hard.
  • Rinse and brush: Rinse with water after eating if you cannot brush straight away, then brush and use interdental brushes as soon as you can.
  • Carry a mini kit: A travel toothbrush, interdental brush, small mirror and wax fit neatly in a pocket or bag.
  • Use orthodontic wax: If a bracket rubs after a long meal, dry the area and place a small ball of wax for comfort.
  • Warm drinks with care: Enjoy tea, mulled drinks or hot chocolate at a safe temperature and avoid sticky toppings like chewy marshmallows.
  • Sugar awareness: Keep sweet treats to mealtimes rather than frequent grazing. Saliva flow during meals helps clear sugars.

Only chew sugar free gum if your Specialist Orthodontist has advised it is suitable for your brace type. If something feels sharp or a wire starts to poke, call us for advice rather than trying to cut wires at home.

Braces friendly swaps for classic festive moments

Small changes keep flavour high and risk low.

  • Love a cheese board? Choose soft cheeses with soft bread or seeded flatbread instead of hard crackers.
  • Fancy a mince pie? Warm it so the pastry softens, or enjoy the spiced fruit filling with custard.
  • Craving crunch? Swap whole nuts for roasted chickpeas cooked until tender, or soft roasted chestnuts that peel easily.
  • Sweet finish? Choose trifle, fruit crumble with plenty of custard, rice pudding with nutmeg, or a square of plain chocolate that melts without chewing.

Looking after your braces during busy gatherings

Holidays often mean long days away from home. A little preparation goes a long way.

  • Before you go: Brush well and pack your mini kit.
  • At the table: Watch for hidden hazards like olive stones, fish bones and nut pieces.
  • After dessert: Sip water, then excuse yourself for a quick brush if practical.
  • Night routine: Brush for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, clean around brackets with an interdental brush, and use fluoride mouthwash at a different time of day.

If a bracket comes loose or a wire bends, contact us promptly. We offer urgent assessments and repairs to keep you comfortable and on track.

A note for aligner wearers

If you are using Invisalign®, you can enjoy most festive foods by removing your aligners to eat, storing them safely in a case, and brushing before reinserting. Aim for around 22 hours of wear per day, and avoid hot drinks while aligners are in place to prevent warping.
